Compost Capers

Boy hugging wormYears Prep - 2

Excursion program overview

Students learn all about the composting process and the wonderful compost creatures that make it happen.  Activities include:

  •  “Gertie the Worm” – Students sing a special song to encourage shy Gertie the worm, a giant puppet, to come and talk to them about rubbish and composting.
  • A delightful interactive role play – ‘The Sad Composting Bin’. Students dress up in our beautiful costumes and help us role-play the story.
  • Video Microscope - Do worms really have hair?  Other interesting facts are revealed as live compost creatures are observed using a video microscope.
  • Live Worms – Students examine live worms with hand lenses and identify their features.
  • Incredible Shrinking Machine – Students venture through our incredible shrinking machine to explore inside a compost bin.
  • Art/Craft – A session is included where students are hands-on in a compost-themed art/craft activity.

Outreach program overview

Most of these activities are included when we come to your school (excluding the Incredible Shrinking Machine).

All activities are heaps of fun, active
and hands on!
