Creature Feature

Years 3 - 4

Excursion program overview

This program explores the biodiversity found within three habitats: forest floor, freshwater pond and compost bin.  Activities include:

  • Video Microscope demonstration – students observe live specimens on a TV screen. Live specimens from three different habitats are shown and discussed. Information about body parts, life cycles, food chains, food webs and adaptations can be included.
  • Ponding - Students use dip nets, identification charts and containers to collect and identify pond creatures.
  • Giant Compost Bin - Students venture through our incredible shrinking machine to explore inside a compost bin.
  • Worms up close - Students have a close up look at compost worms using hand lenses and discover what cocoons and saddles look like.
  • Biodiversity Survey - Students explore the biodiversity within our indigenous forest/garden by collecting amazing minibeasts and collate the results for maths activities back at school.

Outreach program overview

Most of these activities are included when we come to your school (excluding the Giant Compost Bin).

All activities are heaps of fun, active
and hands on!
