Children from Ashburton Primary School choir joined Gould Group CEO and staff at Federation Square on Monday 29th October to re-launch National Bird Day.
The choir sang the original 1939 Gould League Bird Pledge song which encouraged children to protect native birds. The choir then took part in bird watching activities - leaning how to use binoculars to spot Rainbow Lorikeets and Cormorants along the banks of the Yarra River.
Bird Facts:
Australia is home to between 600,000 and 700,000 species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. About 84% of plants, 83% of mammals, and 45% of birds are endemic - that is, they are only found in Australia.
The Department of Environment and Water list 23 birds as extinct, 6 as on the critical endangered list and another 40 which are endangered. People wanting to re-kindle their relationship with their bird pledge can register and print out a new personalised historic bird pledge for themselves and their children and grandchildren.
I hereby promise that I will protect native birds and will not collect their eggs.
I also promise that I will endeavour to prevent others from injuring native birds
and destroying their eggs
