Excursion program overview
The Ricketts Point Tidal Survival Program explores the intertidal rockpools, sandy beaches and coastal vegetation of a marine sanctuary, discovering many common sea creatures. Activities include:
- Safety Talk – A brief overview of how to stay safe at the beach.
- Coastal Vegetation – An exploratory guided tour to discover the adaptations that plants need to survive on the coast.
- Marine Education Centre – Students learn about the role the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary plays in conservation, exploring the Marine Education Centre.
- Rock Platform Ramble – The students will discover some of the sea creatures and plants that live in the intertidal zone. They will look at adaptations and survival methods. This session includes a shell study.
- Change Over Time – The students will become aware of how Port Phillip Bay has changed over geological time. They will role-play an activity that shows how different people used the bay at different times.
- Pollution and the Marine Environment – Students will view the Supaloo of the future and become aware of how their actions at home can affect the marine environment.
- Beachcombing – Students will participate in seaweed study and locate beach treasures along the beach.
Available all year round (tides and weather permitting) at Rickett’s Point Marine Sanctuary only.
